From Shidong Embroidery to Installation Art at Milan’s ZONA SARPI

Embroidery does not have to remain the size of a garment panel to influence contemporary art. At ZONA SARPI in Milan, artist Hu Yuehua’s installation She took inspiration from the layered, soft-relief quality of embroidery associated with Shidong in Guizhou. The organizer’s program placed the work in its April 20–26, 2026 presentation.
The organizer describes an approach built on scale, repetition and geometric recomposition. Those choices matter. Enlarging an embroidered idea can turn a detail that would normally be read from a few centimeters away into a form that surrounds the viewer. Repetition can evoke the patient accumulation of handwork without pretending that an installation and an embroidered textile are the same object.
Inspiration is a specific relationship
The program connects She to women’s knowledge and intergenerational transmission in Miao culture. That is the artist’s stated frame for this work. It should not be generalized into a single meaning for every Shidong textile or every Miao embroidery tradition. Nor does the organizer’s description establish which particular stitches were used to make the installation.
The same program lists another Hu Yuehua work, Fingerprint of the Earth, inspired by terraced fields in Yunnan’s Honghe region and using recycled fabric in black, red and yellow. The two installations share an artist and exhibition setting, but they have different source ideas. Keeping them separate makes the story clearer: one draws on the tactile language of layered embroidery; the other on a landscape and its contours.
What a larger scale can reveal
An installation can make viewers more aware of qualities easy to miss in a photograph of a small textile: the build-up of layers, the interval between repeated forms, and the way a surface changes as one moves around it. The lesson is a way of looking, not a claim that an original regional craft can be fully transferred to a new medium.
Read ZONA SARPI’s event description for the organizer’s account of both works. The event has ended. SAYRUE was not a participant, and the accompanying illustration is an imagined editorial scene rather than documentary imagery.
