Batik Craft

Wax-resist dyeing — known in China as laxie — is one of the country's oldest textile arts, practised for more than two thousand years. A maker draws the pattern by hand with a copper wax knife, painting hot beeswax onto undyed cloth, then dips the fabric into an indigo vat again and again before boiling away the wax. What remains between blue and white are the ice-crack lines, fine fractures where dye slipped through the cracked wax — no two ever repeat, like the crackle of old glaze.
In Guizhou, this is a craft passed down through the Miao and Bouyei peoples, recognised as Chinese national intangible cultural heritage. A people without a written script kept their history in pattern: the concentric spiral at the centre speaks of cycles that continue, the bands of rings and dots scatter like stars, remembering journeys, kinship and blessings. It is why the craft is called a history with no words, worn on the body.
Two thousand years of handwork, held between blue and white. Every piece is different. So is the one who wears it.
